On August 1, 2004, a house erupted in flames in the early morning hours. As a result of the fire, a nine month old child received severe burns to 80% of his body.

The child’s family contended that a gas regulator failed and allowed gas to escape into the lines and subsequently into the child’s home. Eventually, the gas was ignited by a refrigerator condenser. The defendants contended that the fire started in an adjoining bedroom due to an electric hot water heater.

Prior to trial, the defendants settled the case and agreed to pay the child’s family $10 million.
