Plaintiff Doug Hall, an electric cooperative employee, was electrocuted while working on a bypass switch constructed by USCO Power Equipment Corp. The working area around the bypass switch did not include a 2-foot clearance as required by the National Electric Safety Code. As a result of the electrocution and company negligence, Mr. Hall lost the use of an arm.

Following five days of testimony, the jury only needed to deliberate for one hour and forty minutes. The jury found USCO Power Equipment Corp. negligent for failing to include a 2-foot clearance area around the bypass switch. With interest, the jury awarded Mr. Hall $7.7 million. The damages award was the largest in the history of the 21st Judicial District.
